Sadly, dog fighting still exists in the Carolina mountains. It is not unusual for local shelters to take in pit bulls with scars and other physical evidence of being used in this detestable activity.
The Humane Society of the United States has made a commitment to eliminate dog fighting, and it is backing up that commitment with a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a dogfighter. If you are aware of dog fighting, tip off the Humane Society by calling 1-877-TIP-HSUS. Your identity will be protected.
The Humane Society has just instituted a similar program for puppy mills, offering a reward of up to $5,000 to anyone who provides any information leading to the arrest and conviction of a puppy mill operator for illegal animal cruelty. Until the laws governing puppy mills in North Carolina are improved, this is one of the few real ways you can help informally regulate puppy mills. If you have a valid tip, you are encouraged to call 1-877-MILL-TIP. You will remain anonymous.

Hi,
It would be so helpful to all Bully breeds if it could be somehow included that "all dogs" can be brought into the shelter with fighting scars. Boxers are now being bred to be used in fighting in southern FLA. All breeds and mix breeds are at risk to be used as "fight and bait dogs." It would be good to diminish the wonderful APBT as a dog always associated with dog fights as this prolongs the iconic image of a aggressive, dangerous dog. I have two Pit Bull Terriers in my rescue/foster pact of 8 dogs. I'm 60 years old and will "fight" to clear the name of these wonderful canines until my last breath. Thanks so much for this great article to help stop the horrors of dog fighting and puppy mill/back yard breeding.
