PlottFest, an annual event, celebrates the North Carolina state dog, the Plott Hound. This year's PlottFest will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21 at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds in Maggie Valley. Doors open at 9 AM on Saturday and Noon on Sunday.
On Saturday you can listen to fantastic Bluegrass music provided by local musicians and also see some of the best examples of our state dog, the Plott Hound, as they participate in sanctioned dog shows. On Sunday you can be entertained by some of the tops bands in our area as they play good old Gospel music and the kids can take part in trout fishing and learn fishing skills from a local professional angler.
Bear Baying Events: Entry fee $10 per dog. All dogs will be scored by 3 judges on attentiveness, aggression, and speed of barks. All three judges’ scores will be compiled for a total score. Each dog bays for 30 seconds. Any female in heat will be disqualified.
Bear and Coon Treeing Contests: Entry fee $10 per dog. The bear and coon hides will be sprayed with appropriate training scent. The hide will be on ground level until the dog(s) is released. Then, the hide will be elevated and the dogs will be scored on their total number of barks during a 1 minute time period. Dogs must stay inside a 20-foot circle; any dog leaving the circle during the timed period will be disqualified. Any female in heat will be disqualified.
Youth Bench Show: No entry fee. Plott dogs only. Youth are encouraged to show their own dog; if this is not possible, a Plott will be provided. Pictures will be taken by NPHA personnel and displayed in the next edition of the NPHA and APA Yearbooks. All participants will receive a participation award.
UKC Sanctioned Bench Show in conjunction with NPHA: 1pm - Saturday
Entry Fee: $15/dog. Dogs will be judged by UKC/NPHA authorized judge using standard bench show judging procedures. All dogs MUST be registered with the UKC.cause this is a registry sanctioned show, there are no breed restrictions as long as the dog meets registry requirements.
Both the American Plott Association (APA) and the National Plott Hound Association (NPHA) will have booths to sign up new members and to sell their merchandise.
AKC Plott Hound Agility Champion's demonstration 11am & 3pm Saturday / 1pm &3pm Sunday. Owner/trainers will also have a booth on site to educate the public about these events.
Wayward Plotts - an organization devoted to rescuing abandoned Plott hounds from shelters - will have a booth on site to educate the public about their services.
Bob Plott, Author, magazine columnist, Plott historian and dog breeder, will be on site signing his books and visiting with Plott enthusiasts and honoring breed legends on-stage throughout the event.
