Hit the Hendersonville Trails from April 11 - 18

Screen Shot 2021-02-26 at 10.30.57 AMGather your favorite hiking buddy, canine or human, and explore the amazing trails in the Hendersonville, NC area thanks to the work of Conserving Carolina in support of Blue Ridge Humane Society.

During the week of April 11-18th hit the trails that have been made possible by Conserving Carolina with your favorite two- or four-legged friend and complete additional challenges for prizes from Blue Ridge Humane Society and Conserving Carolina!

Hike options:
  • Bearwallow Mountain: a moderate 2 mile round trip through beautiful woods to an open bald that is accessible thanks to a conservation easement and trail building by Conserving Carolina
  • The Oklawaha Greenway: Walk any segment of the 3.25 miles of Greenway between Jackson Park and Berkeley Mills Park. The greenway provides a paved pathway through vital wetland areas with little elevation changes. Conserving Carolina is a founding member of the Friends of Oklawaha Greenway, an organization that stewards the existing greenway path as well as advocates for extending its length with new greenway segments and connector routes.
  • The Park at Flat Rock: The park is 68 acres with a 1.5 mile crushed cinder perimeter trail and other walking paths that intersect the main trail. Conserving Carolina aided in establishment of The Park at Flat Rock in 2014, helping to secure funding for land acquisition including authoring an NC Parks & Recreation Trust Fund grant. The grant provided significant funding to help defray the costs of acquiring the land.
Complete one or all of the hikes and walks and discover for yourself the work of Conserving Carolina in the community with your furry friend. Proceeds support Conserving Carolina and the programs of Blue Ridge Humane Society that provide new homes for pets in need, support services for local pets and their owners, and more!

Sarge's Furry Friends Online FunRaiser Through Oct. 25

Screen Shot 2020-10-21 at 9.39.24 AM
In this upside-down year, Sarge’s reimagined the annual Furry Friends Benefit Bash, a fall tradition. Since a large gathering for a sit-down dinner with auctions is not safe right now, the event will be held as an online auction through October 25 on Facebook.

“When we realized we couldn’t have Sarge’s Furry Friends Benefit Bash, we still wanted to have some fun,” said Paula Gatens, Sarge’s board member and auction committee leader. “Many small businesses in Haywood County stepped up to help us with this effort. We are thankful for their continuing support. We have more than 150 items for the auction.”

Returning to the auction will be the ever-popular rights to have your pet pictured on the 2021 Sarge’s Dog Walk T-shirt. New this year will be the rights to have your pet featured as Pet of the Month on Sarge’s website.

Auction items include dog and cat items, collectibles, golf certificates, plus area store, restaurant, and brewery gift cards. New items include a stay in a Waynesville Main Street apartment, five days of dog camp, pet laser therapy sessions, a salt room experience, personal training sessions, and handmade beaded ornaments.

“As the holidays approach, the gift cards in Sarge’s auction will make great gifts, and are easy to mail for those who are gifting this holiday season,” said Fred Strohm, Sarge’s administrator.

Sarge’s will use the services of Helping PAWS, Inc. to administer the auction. Helping PAWS is a group of dedicated animal lovers who run online auctions, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to rescue groups and animals in need.

Visit the Sarge’s FunRaiser event at: www.facebook.com/events/246139396749503; the auction will be active Oct. 21 – 25.

Sarge’s is grateful to Haywood County businesses, local artists and Sarge’s volunteers for donating items for the auction.

"Barkyard Party" Fundraiser for Blue Ridge Humane Society - Hendersonville, Sept. 19

Screen Shot 2020-07-22 at 2.16.29 PMBlue Ridge Humane Society in Hendersonville, NC is suggesting supporters sign up for a do it yourself "Barkyard Party" to be held on September 19, 2020!

Here are the details from the organization:

Your DIY event can be in the format you desire: a sit down formal event, potluck, dessert bar, brunch, themed event, pet-friendly, kid free, kid friendly, etc. Team up with a friend to co-host or use a central location such as your favorite restaurant or community clubhouse.  Then invite your friends to join you in honor of Blue Ridge Humane and raising funds that allow Blue Ridge Humane to continue our work during this strange time.

Who can host? Anyone can host! If you feel comfortable with a small group of people, invite them over to learn more about Blue Ridge Humane and to support our work. You can also sign up as a virtual host and keep your event to a party of one!

How is this a fundraiser? Since large scale events are unsafe at this time and social distancing is the new normal, we ask that hosts share the work that Blue Ridge Humane is doing in the community with their guests in a small group setting, and that guests make a donation in lieu of purchasing a traditional event ticket.

Who can I invite? Anyone you like! Invite your pet loving friends, family, or neighbors to learn about Blue Ridge Humane and support us this year.

Can I team up with someone to host? Of course! You can co-host, use an alternative location, and make your remote event exactly what you are comfortable with!

What is provided for hosts?

  • Special host basket with treats and local goodies, acknowledgment in our newsletter and other promotions, entry into our event prize drawings.
  • Talking points and facts about Blue Ridge Humane
  • Invitation wording templates for use if you choose
  • Donation collection materials
  • BRHS staff to answer your questions.

Are hosts responsible for the full cost? You can be or you can make it a potluck, have only dessert and wine or coffee, etc. All options are open, depending on your personal preferences.
